Dental Implants

Jag has been placing implants for 18 years and is the only UK maxillofacial/head neck surgeon that is able to offer both surgical and restorative perspectives for implant treatment. This means that he is able to complete your entire implant treatment himself, without having to refer you for complex bone grafting techniques or complex dental rehabilitation.

Jag is a consultant surgeon on the specialist register and a fully certified and trained dental implant surgeon. He is able to offer all bone grafting techniques including guided bone regeneration, sinus lift techniques and onlay bone grafting. These procedures can be offered under local anaesthesia or a general anaesthetic.

Jag can offer implant placement for single missing teeth and multiple missing teeth requiring bridge and denture restorations. Jag also offers ‘teeth in a day’ treatment with a full set of permanently fixed and immediate placement of teeth on four to six implants for the entire upper or lower jaws.

The option to place implants as replacement teeth alleviates many of the problems associated with conventional crowns, bridges or dentures. Whilst not the cheapest option, implants allow the fixed replacement of your missing or unrestorable teeth, unlike a removable denture. These implants can be used to retain crowns and bridges as well as removable dentures.

Implant retained dentures are often smaller than a conventional denture, they can be free from covering the palate for the upper jaw, and the attachment of the denture to the implants significantly improves denture retention and stability. The minimum number of implants for adequate denture stability is four implants in the upper jaw and three implants in the lower jaw.

When you require a full set of new teeth an alternative restoration to a removable denture is a fixed, or ‘screwed in’ bridge supported on four or six implants, this is called an ‘all-on-four’ or ‘all-on-six’ restoration. The advantage of this solution is that the bridge is permanently fixed to the implant and does not require removing from the mouth. For this option we would place four or six implants immediately after extraction of any remaining teeth and give you a ‘screwed in’ full set of teeth supported by these implants on the same day. The teeth would be constructed of acrylic but would have a titanium structure within them. This structure provides a considerable amount of strength, and therefore this type of restoration is generally smaller than any denture options. The temporary restoration does not need to cover the roof of your mouth either, meaning that on the day of surgery you will leave with a full arch of fixed in teeth with no plastic or metal in the roof of your mouth.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. Because implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges mounted to implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth — an especially important benefit when eating and speaking. This secure fit helps the dentures and bridges — as well as individual crowns placed over implants — feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

For some people, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or even possible, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. In addition, ordinary bridges must be attached to teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. An advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement tooth/teeth in place.
